Dear Mr.  Paquet,

I was not expecting that a PhD in Soil Science playing advanced gardening at home would develop a new science. Perhaps, deep innovation comes much more from intellectual resources than economic funding!

I am curious on what you have in mind about the Research an Innovation of the European Union to support a new science that I have been conceiving deeply for more than two decades.

Hydrology has been neglected on fluidic devices in the patenting affairs more than a century offering a huge opportunity for upgrading on so many applications.

BACKGROUNDMan started using artificial porosities around 70,000 years ago developing oil lamps. The device was very important on handling small fire consuming less fuel per time. The basic conception was employing natural fibers called wick to connect fuel in the bottom toward the flame on the top. This porosity device had to resist to high temperature of flames. The fluid goes up and evaporates leaving the porosity system after burning. Nowadays, modern industry can make synthetic fibers of plastic that do not resist to the high temperature of flames and cannot be used on oil lamps, but can transmit water upward on self-watering of potted plants. Then, I was lucky employing such devices because water leaves the porosity system by evapotranspiration. I realized that the nylon cord fails as a wick on oil lamps. Consequently, a sort of technical and scientific gap was available to explore.

I have a deep background to understand that this fluid movement upward on porosity is called ‘UNSATURATED HYDRAULIC FLOW’ in Soil Physics/Hydrogeology. I got surprised having an American patent, (US 6,766,817) issued so easily, and that wick is heavily mentioned on fluidic devices as inventors had no idea about UNSATURATED FLOW, meaning that they are not aware about flow dynamics between Hydraulic Zones Saturated/Unsaturated. This process was tenable as the patents became available on line in the internet in the beginning of this millennium.

People that try to develop fluidic devices handling artificial porosities just ignore Hydrology. Today, November 27. 2019, by tracking dynamics in the American patenting system, thermal conductivity it is mentioned in 137,732 issued patents; electrical conductivity is mentioned in 109,448 issued patents while hydraulic conductivity of fluid moving on porosities is mentioned in only 1050 issued patents. This is taking place because lay people skirting common knowledge address it as wick/wicking, which is mentioned in 44,466 issued patents. Movement of fluids on porous systems above the water table as UNSATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY is portrayed in only 32 issued patents.

I would not have hurry to develop my project, but the mining situation in Brazil is deteriorating fast getting always worse with unpredictable outcome depending on the size of coming tragedies from mining residue dam collapsing. Solid rock after grinding loses its mechanical support and should flow downhill one day favored by a bounty water recharge. As a PhD in Soil Science, I must say that ground rock does not become soil overnightThe weathering of rocks takes thousands or millions of years. By correcting the mining operation, we can spare lives, protect the environment and profit on many technological edge expanded by an updated knowledge from Hydrology on artificial porosity systems.

If EU can host and develop my science Hydrotechnology, I have no problems relocating permanently to Europe and work together broadly in this complex project. Antoine Lavoisier is French and father of Modern Chemistry. Alfred Nobel was working with explosives as a father of dynamite. Now, we can have a NEW ERA OF HYDROLOGY, the science of life expanding our understanding on artificial porosity that started with flowerpots on self-watering borrowing insights from Soil Physics/Hydrogeology and biological porosities learning with phloem and xylem.

I must say that I feel honored if EU join me in this enterprise of innovation I bumped to, having no cue on how far the boundaries we could conquer.

I am looking forward to exchange ideas on the best approach to achieve such goals.

Kind regards,

Campinas, November 28, 2019
